Dear Readers,

Hope May is going well for all!  If you are in Canada, where I am based, you must be loving the warmer weather now!

On behalf of the Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS), I have been excited in organizing the second part of our public seminar series Moving Forward: An Intimate Evening on Media, Diversity and Social Justice.  While the first seminar on March 29 focussed on individual change, the second one looks at social change, particularly cultural diversity and social justice movements in media and celebrity culture on May 30.  Here, celebrity activism will be definitely considered!

Last night, I received the honour and privilege to share the upcoming seminar over an interview on South Asian Focus on Rogers Television (Channel 10) with Advisory Board member and co-speaker, Tushar Unadkat who is a multiple award-winning media personality and recipient of the Trailblazer Award at Canada’s ReelWorld Film Festival.  Sincere thanks to Dinesh Sachdev, Huma Khan, and Sunny Joshi for the engaging interview.

On May 30, Moving Forward offers an opportunity to connect through a special opening reception, roundtable discussion, and exclusive performance at the industReal arts room (688 Richmond Street West). The evening opens with a reception honouring distinguishing participants Tushar Unadkat, Sylvia Fraser, Salvatore Greco, Mary Fantaske, Michael Sizer, and Heryka Miranda.

Sylvia

An award-winning novelist, a memoirist, a travel writer and a journalist from The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star, Sylvia Fraser has published a dozen books under her own name, and ghostwritten several others. She is probably best known for her 1987 international bestseller, My Father’s House: a Memoir of Incest and of Healing, credited as being one of the first to break the taboo on childhood sexual abuse.

Ryerson University’s Mary Fantaske reveals hidden truths in marginal representations of bodies and abilities. She is a graduate researcher from the Department of Communication and Culture at Ryerson University. Roundtable discussant Salvatore Greco has been an integral part of the Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) RTA School of Media at Ryerson University. His critical observations and insightful views on Rob Ford’s celebrity status and alternative use of tabloid formats set new grounds for social justice in media culture. Michael Sizer shows how the public can activate citizen journalism and screens his ground-breaking film The Whole World is Watching after the roundtable discussion.

On May 30, the evening closes with a live performance titled Stepping Into Her Knowing by social change artist and holistic dance practitioner Heryka Miranda. In 2013 she was the International Guest Fellow with the award-winning Dancing Earth Indigenous Contemporary Dance Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico and an ambassador of Ashima Suri`s Limitless Productions that was recently featured among academics, artists and activists at the Feminist Art Conference (FAC) successfully coordinated by Ilene Sova.

Heryka

I have been incredibly proud of the fearless views that our panelists have been sharing and moving audiences in ways that are deeply touching and empowering in intimate spaces.  The spirit of our inaugural seminar Moving Forward: An Intimate Evening on Paths, Success and Love in March definitely continues.  Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS) honourable Advisory Board member and soul partner Louis Massey just published his ebook Path: Live Your Life Fully, which is now available on Amazon – a must-read for all!  Sincere gratitude goes to CMCS member Jarret Ruminski for his positive support.

Louis

We have been receiving amazing feedback on our public seminar series and looking forward to bringing more inspirations, critical thoughts, and empowerment through critical lens of celebrity culture.

If you are in the Greater Toronto Area, definitely attend and meet us at our next public seminar that I will be moderating.  Doors will open with a cash bar and Reuben James` prize-winning bakery at 6 pm on Friday, May 30!

Celebrate your path and keep shining as a star.

Looking forward to sharing more soon!

With affection,

Samita Nandy
