Fandom at the 2013 Canadian Communication Association (CCA) Conference

Dear Celebrity Studies Readers,

The 2013 annual conference program of the Canadian Communication Association (CCA) has been just released! You can now check the program at http://www.acc-cca.ca/Resources/Documents/CCAPreliminarySchedule2013-0324.pdf.  The conference will be taking place in Victoria this June.

On behalf of the brand new Centre for Media and Celebrity Studies (CMCS), we are always excited to see developments in celebrity studies and fandom at the conference! CMCS Board members Dr Louis Massey and I engaged in digital media, fandom, and democracy at one of the past CCA conferences held at Carleton University in Ottawa.

At Carleton, we have memories of discussing how actor Jeff Douglas became instantly famous for highlighting stereotypical characteristics of being Canadian in a Molson Canadian beer advertisement!  The discussion was part of my paper “Locating Canada in De-territorialized Spaces of Online Fandom – Nationalism in Technological Mediations of Popular Culture.”  We found out that Canadian fans may accept dominant representations of an actor’s national identity.  At the same time, they are able to negotiate tensions in dominant discourses and are able to subvert national imaginations in the interative space of online media.

Angie Chiang’s “Is Every…one a Fan? Conceptualizing the Audience in a Post-Television Era” is an exciting paper to be presented at CCA this year.

We look forward to her findings and further our understanding on how we can act as active audiences in the media industry!

Hope this post finds you well and you are having an empowered week!

Stayed tuned for our CCA photographs at www.facebook.com/Celebrity.Studies and reviews of the latest Celebrity Studies conferences.

With affection and more soon,

Samita Nandy
